Moxibustion and Acupuncture

If you’ve ever been interested in traditional Chinese medicine, then there’s a good chance that you’ve heard about moxibustion. Among other eastern medicine practices, it’s less than traditional to western medicine, but it’s effective and all natural. Read more to find out why you should try it and what you can gain from it.

What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is the practice of burning dried plant materials known as moxa. It’s a form of heat therapy that places the burnt plant material on the surface of the skin.

Why Would I choose Moxibustion

The point of moxibustion is to warm and energize the Qi in one’s body and be rid of pathogens.

What Can I Expect from Moxibustion?

Your practitioner will hold a moxa stick close to your skin, don’t worry though, the stick will never touch your skin. From here, the moxa will be compressed into a pole containing the plant matter and lit on fire. Your practitioner will wave the moxa stick counter clockwise over an acupoint.

Does Moxibustion Hurt?

Depending on the type of moxibustion you choose, it can be somewhat painful, or not painful at all. If you choose direct moxibustion, the acupoint will be burned at the skin. If you choose indirect moxibustion, your acupoints will not be burned, making it a much less painful procedure.

Some people even report warm sensations that feel good, rather than painful sensations.

What Can I Use Moxibustion For?

The main point of moxibustion is to improve blood flow. As your blood flow begins to increase, ailments and issues with organs and joints begin to improve. Oftentimes, moxibustion has been used to breech babies into a normal head position.

What is Mugwort?

Mugwort is a species of plants found in Asia, Europe, and North America. It’s a plant that has been used in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese Traditional Medicine. Mugwort is the herb that is burned near the acupoint.

How Does Moxibustion Work with Acupuncture?

This practice is meant to be used in conjunction with acupuncture but both can be used exclusively. They both are an aspect of traditional Chinese medicine and offer great benefits.
