Bell’s Palsy is a sudden onset of unilateral facial paralysis. The 7th brain nerve regulates one side of the facial muscles related to facial movement and expressions. Most Bell’s Palsy patients have experienced a disorder to their nervous system. either side of the face may be affected, with attacks recurring in about 10% of cases.

In oriental medicine, Bell’s Palsy is called the “invading wind” which can occur both in the old, young, and pregnant.

  • Sensitive hearing
  • Disorder of the lachrymal gland
  • Disorder of the salivary gland

What are its causes?

  • Diabetes
  • Over-exposure to the cold (too much air-conditioning or sleeping with the window open)
  • Guillain-Barre Syndrome (problems with the immune system)
  • An external wound, surgery, or another physical disorder
  • Herpes simplex virus, syphilis, or Lyme disease

What can oriental medicine and acupuncture do to treat Bell’s Palsy?

We recommend patients to consult with our office within the first two weeks of the first symptoms. In our many years of practice, we have seen that those who are treated by us within these crucial first two weeks recover quickly and see drastic improvements. The longer they wait, the longer it takes to heal.

To better treat our patients affected by Bell’s Palsy, we ask that they bring any diagnostic test results, Lyme disease tests, herpes virus (HSV) results, or MRI’s.

Acupuncture: Needles are used to stimulate the nerve and clear blocked passages/meridians. Acupuncture not only enables blood circulation to the affected area, but it is also beneficial to the immune system which accelerates the healing process. Coupled with herbs, acupuncture will quickly rebuild the patients’ Qi. Most cases require 1 – 2 months of steady treatments with patients seeing visible results within the first few treatments.

Herbs: Depending on each individual symptom, we prescribe a unique mix of herbs. Herbs help the rejuvenation process and simultaneously reduce side-effects and possible relapse.
