inner hero

It’s cold and flu season, and it’s been cold and flu season now for a while. The winter months are great for challenging our immune health, as it puts to work our body’s security detail and our first line of defense to combat the gamut of nasty bacteria and viruses. Ask anyone, and they’ve likely formed their own repertoire on what they swear by to treat the first signs of illness. Some load up on vitamin C, zinc, and elderberry, while others take shots of apple cider vinegar or chew on raw garlic! Whatever your go-to method is, incorporate acupuncture into your cold and flu season immune defense.

How can acupuncture help?

Having a weakened immune system from factors such as a combination of a poor diet and lifestyle or a chronic health condition, it can make cold and flu season miserable. Every day you walk into an increasingly empty office as people are being taken down left and right. If you’re looking for a different approach to help boost your immune system, instead of just covering up and bandaging symptoms the traditional healthcare system uses, acupuncture is wonderful for restoring and revitalizing your immune function. The cold and flu season isn’t something you just have to anticipate, nor participate in — strengthen your immune system and live the season out healthfully.

Acupuncture can strengthen your immune system, by fortifying what Chinese medicine refers to as the chi (qi). The chi is considered your body’s lifeforce and it flows within channels from your head to your toes. They flow along meridians and connect with different organs along the way. When the chi becomes blocked, the result is illness. So, to treat illness, the blocked chi must be cleared — this is where acupuncture comes in! There are specific acupuncture points along these channels that can access and manipulate your chi.

In cold and flu season, regularly seeing an acupuncturist can keep your chi moving freely, thus preventing illness. Acupuncture can address weak chi (everyone has it) to help support energy and strengthen the immune system. When your chi is sluggish and you feel worn down, that is the perfect time for bacteria and viruses to invade, so give your system a poke with acupuncture!

Acupuncture points for immune support

We’re taking a guess that you don’t have a four year Chinese medicine graduate program under your belt, so these points may seem, well, pointless! But, it’s fun to learn some points and then ask your acupuncturist about them.

Common immune points include the following:

  • Large Intestine (LI) 10 and 11 – First it’s important to address that the organ points can refer to both the literal large intestine and the figurative one. Don’t panic that you have an illness or blockage in your large intestine because that is where the point is being focused. Stimulation of LI 10 and 11 is awesome to boost your immune function.
  • Kidney 27 – This point is wonderful for people who are prone to the flu or upper respiratory infections. It will give the lungs a much needed boost.
