Common-Myths-About-Acupuncture-Busted-59b959b3b73f4

Acupuncture has been around for centuries, but there are still many myths around it. At Lee Acupuncture, we work hard every day to help people live their best lives, and too many times, myths prevent them from making fully-informed decisions for their care. It’s hard to make a smart choice when you’re tangled up in myths. In today’s blog, we’re going to discuss several common myths about acupuncture and clear them up in hopes it gives you a chance to make the best choice for your health.

MYTH: Acupuncture can only treat pain.

Truth: While acupuncture absolutely can treat pain, it can do a lot more. It has also been used to successfully treat morning sickness, allergies, infertility, nausea, and chemotherapy side effects. That means you shouldn’t write acupuncture off as a possibility just because you’re struggling with something other than pain.

MYTH: If you don’t see results after a couple treatments, acupuncture won’t work for you.

Truth: Everyone responds to acupuncture differently. Some people see results very quickly, and others have to wait a bit longer – up to 10 treatments – before they see results. The thing is, acupuncture works cumulatively. The treatments build on top of each other. And even if you don’t see results after a good deal of treatment, keep in mind that acupuncturists work differently and you may just need a different technician.

MYTH: There are a lot of side effects to acupuncture, so I’ll need to take time off of work.

Truth: This is one of the most widespread myths about acupuncture, which actually has little to no side effects. Patients can usually get right back to their normal activities right after treatment.

MYTH: Acupuncture hurts because it is done with needles.

Truth: We understand why people who dislike needles are leery of getting acupuncture. They just don’t see how anything with needles could improve what they’re already going through! The thing is, you have to leave your normal conception of needles at the door when you enter an acupuncture facility. Acupuncture needles are about the size of a cat’s whisker. If people feel anything, it’s usually like a mosquito bite. Any discomfort people feel fades or goes away completely as your acupuncturist adjusts the needles. You’ll often feel a heaviness, electrical sensation, or throbbing. That is normal and good.

MYTH: Once you start getting acupuncture, you have to keep going or the effects go away.

Acupuncture gives your body the chance to heal so that you don’t need acupuncture anymore. While people with chronic conditions sometimes benefit from regular maintenance, acupuncture is usually enough to give people lasting relief. Good acupuncturists are not in the business to trap you; they’re in it to help you, and if you feel like the treatment isn’t helping you move forward with your life, find a different acupuncturist.

At Lee Acupuncture, we are proud to provide Newport Beach with world-class acupuncture. There is nothing we love more than helping people of all ages realize they don’t have to just deal with whatever is troubling them. Make an appointment today!
