At Lee Acupuncture, we’re here to support you in your endometriosis journey through acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and as we’ll explore today, through food.

The Food Connection and Endometriosis

It’s amazing the power that a healthy, nourishing diet has — it supports and balances the symptoms of endometriosis, amongst many other things including hormone balance.

Let’s examine foods that are supportive of endometriosis in helping mitigate symptoms and soothe pain and discomfort related to the disorder.

Healthy Fats

Healthy fats are extremely nourishing to our bodies and, omega-fatty acids specifically, are wonderful in supporting a healthy cycle and combating inflammation that can be associated with endometriosis.

As we mentioned above, omega-3s promote a healthy inflammation balance in our bodies, and furthermore, there have been studies showing that omega-3 does not only inhibit the survival of endometrial cells, but they may also discourage the propagation of endometrial cells in other parts of the body besides the uterus.

Alternatively, it’s vital to steer clear of unhealthy fats such as trans fats and limit the intake of omega-6 fatty acids.

Veg Out!

Adding a wide variety of vegetables and some fruit is important to those managing endometriosis. Not only are vegetables packed with lovely vitamins and minerals, but they are packed with fiber!

Studies have shown that fiber may help lower estrogen levels, which is beneficial for those with endometriosis.

One last food for thought, veggies and fruit are also high in antioxidants, which play a beautiful role in tackling inflammation.

Bypass Alcohol and Caffeine

Unfortunately, both alcohol and caffeine do a number on those struggling with endometriosis, so the first step is to limit your intake of both beverages. These beverages have also been linked to increased estrogen levels in women, which again, can greatly worsen symptoms of endometriosis.

At the end of the day, we understand that completely cutting alcohol and caffeine is not doable, but it’s simply limiting their consumption — instead of two cups of coffee try one and consider limiting wine to weekends.

Reduce Processed Foods

Processed foods can not only be the culprit of omega-6 fatty acids, but they’re often extremely high in sugar and sodium, which can send your inflammation response into overdrive. So, if you notice yourself constantly snacking on chips and cookies throughout your day, try by supplementing these processed foods with fresh cut veggies or other healthier alternatives.

The right foods are nourishing to our bodies and a variety of healthy fats, veggies and fruit, and whole, unprocessed foods can support those with endometriosis.
