Stress plays a role in a myriad of health issues, and for women, a hormonal imbalance is at the forefront of this insidious response.

Why are women so concerned with a hormonal imbalance? Perhaps women are becoming more acutely aware because of the complications that can arise from hormonal issues — we see weight gain and mood concerns to anxiety and even leg cramps. The effects of stress on our hormonal fluctuations can just make a person not feel so great.

Stress — we’re all likely coping with it in some form or another! And, it makes a huge impact on women’s hormones! If you’re looking for a solution, Lee Acupuncture can help! Join us today as we explore the role of stress and how it influences women’s hormones.

Stress And Hormonal Imbalance

There is a great need for a solution to hormonal imbalances in women — in a recent study of women aged 30 to 60, it was reported that roughly half of them had experienced symptoms related to a hormonal imbalance. This means that nearly half of women are experiencing factors related to a hormone imbalance including hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, vaginal dryness, sleep issues, anxiety, low sex drive, etc and each symptom can affect a woman’s quality of life in a different way.

So, where does stress factor in? Stress manifests in nearly all of our lives — from the compounding responsibilities of work to our relationships — which can do a number, especially, females, on our hormones.

The thing with a hormonal imbalance is that our hormones can be influenced by so many things — including stress — and we can’t measure what hormone is being released or at what rate — this is where many of us can take homeostasis for granted. Because it’s the constant little things that disrupt our hormones, it’s important to control the things we can!

When you’re stressed, our adrenal gland takes progesterone and converts it to cortisol — an infamous stress hormone. This then lowers progesterone levels, sometimes resulting in infertility in women, thus stress impacts some women’s abilities to conceive.

Lower levels of progesterone are also associated with intense PMS symptoms and mood disturbances. Women may even experience long, heavy periods, and some research has indicated that this factor alone makes a woman more susceptible to breast cancer.

How do you know it’s stress?

When hormones are influenced by many factors, stress is one of the biggest for women. Sometimes we experience symptoms and don’t even know they’re related to a hormonal imbalance.

The best way to combat it is to know your body. Does something just feel off? Have you gone through a trying period in life? Stress manifests itself in a hormone imbalance by dulling memories, disrupting our thinking, and causing an upheaval in our relationships.

Not only do these symptoms impact our daily lives, but chronic stress may also increase your chance of stroke, cancer, heart disease, and other gynecological concerns.

The great news is that you can learn to manage your stress and acupuncture plays a vital role in hormone balance!
